The songbird hills
Mizoram is a quiet, deeply Christian state of ridge-top towns, terraced hills and some of the friendliest people in India. Aizawl clings to a spine of hills; Reiek and Hmuifang offer viewpoints and heritage villages; Champhai's vineyards look across to Myanmar. Tourism is young here, which is exactly its charm — and, since 2025, a new railway finally reaches the capital.

Aizawl
A hill capital of steep lanes, the vast Solomon's Temple, Durtlang viewpoints and the bustling Bara Bazar (closed Sundays).
Reiek
A heritage village and forest peak with plains views, host to the Anthurium Festival.
Champhai & Rih Dil
Rice-bowl valley and vineyards on the Myanmar border, near the mythic heart-shaped lake of Rih Dil (just inside Myanmar).
Vantawng Falls
Mizoram's highest waterfall, near Thenzawl, amid weaving villages.
Phawngpui (Blue Mountain)
The state's highest peak and national park, rich in rhododendron and birdlife.
Vangchhia
Megalithic menhirs and carved stones, an ASI-protected 'roofed pathway' site.
Getting there
By air. Lengpui (Aizawl) has flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi.
By rail. The Bairabi–Sairang line opened in September 2025, bringing trains to within 20 km of Aizawl, including a Rajdhani.
By road. Hill highways from Silchar (Assam); allow a full day. Sundays are very quiet across the state.

Every visitor needs a permit: Indians an Inner Line Permit (apply online), foreigners a Protected Area Permit through a registered operator.

Try: Bai (boiled vegetables with pork), Vawksa rep (smoked pork), Sawhchiar (rice porridge), Bamboo-shoot dishes.
Budget: Budget to mid-range. Aizawl hotels ₹1,500–5,000; homestays elsewhere. Mostly dry, though 2025 rules allow local wine and tourist IMFL permits.
