Vantawng Falls & Phawngpui
The state's highest waterfall and its sacred blue mountain
Two of Mizoram's great natural sights bookend the state. Near Thenzawl, Vantawng Falls is the highest waterfall in Mizoram, a shimmering multi-stage cascade dropping through dense green forest, best viewed from a hillside platform across the gorge; Thenzawl itself is a weaving town where you can watch Mizo textiles being made on traditional looms.
Far to the south, Phawngpui — the 'Blue Mountain' — is the highest peak in Mizoram at around 2,157 metres and the heart of a national park, revered by the Mizo as the home of spirits. Its grassy summit, rhododendron and orchid slopes, and rich birdlife (including the rare Blyth's tragopan) reward the trek to the top with sweeping views towards Myanmar.
