Phawngpui (Blue Mountain)
The sacred highest peak of Mizoram
Phawngpui — the 'Blue Mountain' — is the highest peak in Mizoram at around 2,157 metres and the heart of a national park in the far south of the state, near the Myanmar border. Revered by the Mizo as the home of the spirits, its grassy summit and slopes of rhododendron and orchid offer sweeping views towards Myanmar and rich birdlife, including the rare Blyth's tragopan.
The trek to the top is moderate and can be done over a couple of days with a park permit and a local guide, deep in one of the least-visited corners of the Northeast. For those who reach it, the mountain's silence, flowers and views are a real reward off the beaten track.
