Dzukou Valley
The valley of flowers of the Northeast
The trek into the Dzukou Valley is the most popular in Nagaland and one of the loveliest short treks in India. From the trailheads at Viswema or Zakhama near Kohima, a steep climb through forest reaches the rim, then descends into a rolling, emerald valley cut by a meandering stream at around 2,450 metres — famous for the wild Dzukou lily and the carpets of seasonal flowers that bloom across it in summer.
Most trekkers stay overnight in the valley's basic rest house or camp, to wake to frost or mist giving way to sun across the grass. It is achievable for reasonably fit first-timers, cold at the top year-round, and endlessly photogenic — the signature trek of the Naga hills.
