Nokrek Peak
The highest peak of the Garo Hills, in a biosphere reserve
Nokrek, at around 1,412 metres, is the highest peak in the Garo Hills of western Meghalaya and the core of the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognised site rich in biodiversity — home to the rare red panda and to the wild citrus (Citrus indica) believed to be an ancestor of all cultivated oranges. The trek up from near Tura passes through dense subtropical forest alive with birds, butterflies and orchids.
Far less trekked than Meghalaya's eastern trails, Nokrek is for those who want solitude and serious forest, and it opens up the culture of the Garo people and the little-visited western hills. Local guides and permits for the reserve are arranged from Tura.
