Assam grows more than half of India's tea, and the estates around Jorhat and Dibrugarh are among the most atmospheric places to stay in the Northeast. Many colonial-era planters' bungalows have been turned into heritage stays, where you can sleep in a century-old timber house, walk the manicured tea, watch the plucking and processing, and take high tea on a veranda looking over a sea of green.
The other great Assam experience is the Brahmaputra itself. Luxury river cruises glide between Guwahati and Jorhat over several days, stopping at Kaziranga, Majuli, riverside villages and temples, with the chance to spot Gangetic river dolphins. Together, a tea-estate stay and a stretch of river make the slow, gracious side of Assam that most visitors miss.
