Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
The world's densest rhino population, an easy day from Guwahati
If you have only a day to spare from Guwahati, Pobitora is the answer. This small sanctuary on the flood-plains of the Brahmaputra packs in the highest density of one-horned rhino anywhere on earth β well over a hundred of them in a compact patch of grassland β so sightings are all but guaranteed, often within minutes of the first jeep drive.
Just about 50 km east of Guwahati, Pobitora makes a perfect half-day or full-day trip: a morning jeep safari across the grass, a climb to the little hilltop temple for a view over the wetland, and time to watch the migratory birds that gather on the beels in winter. It is far less crowded than Kaziranga and ideal for travellers short on time.
What to see & do
- One-horned rhino at close range β the densest population in the world
- Morning jeep safari across the grassland and wetland
- Winter migratory birds on the beels
- The hilltop temple viewpoint over the sanctuary

Getting there, step by step
Guwahati β Pobitora β50 km, 1.5 hrs β an easy morning day trip
Pobitora is the ideal half-day escape from Guwahati: about 50 km east in Morigaon district, an easy 1.5-hour drive on good roads through paddy and wetland. Leave the city early, do the first morning jeep safari when the rhinos are grazing and the light is soft, and you can be back by lunch.
Because it is so close, there is no need to stay overnight β treat it as a Guwahati day out. Many travellers pair it with Hajo's temples or Madan Kamdev's ruins on the way back to make a full and varied day, seeing wildlife, faith and archaeology in a single loop.
