Deopahar, Numaligarh
Ancient stone ruins on a forested hill near Kaziranga
Near Numaligarh in Golaghat district, on a low forested hill known as Deopahar (or Deoparbat, 'the hill of the gods'), stand the ruins of an early-medieval temple — a carved stone doorframe, fallen sculptures and the base of a shrine dating to around the 9th century, a relic of the Kamarupa era set in a protected green reserve.
It is an easy, rewarding detour for anyone travelling the Guwahati–Kaziranga–Jorhat road, only a short way off the highway near the Numaligarh refinery township. Quiet, shaded and little known, Deopahar pairs archaeology with a gentle forest walk, and makes a fine leg-stretch on the long drive through Upper Assam.
