Solomon's Temple
A vast white landmark of Mizo Christianity
Mizoram is one of India's most devoutly Christian states, and nothing expresses that faith more strikingly than Solomon's Temple, a colossal white edifice rising from the hills at Chawnpui on the edge of Aizawl. Built by the Kohhran Thianghlim (Holy Church) congregation, it has been under construction for years, funded entirely by voluntary donations and labour from members of the church.
The building's scale and gleaming white marble-and-tile finish make it visible from far across the city's ridges. Its cavernous, pillared prayer hall can hold thousands of worshippers, and the calm, ordered grandeur of the interior is a surprise to visitors who expect a modest hill chapel.
For the traveller, Solomon's Temple is both a landmark and a window into Mizo society, where the church is the centre of community life and Sunday is observed with real quiet across the state. Visitors of all faiths are welcome, provided they come respectfully and dressed appropriately.
