Tinsukia
Trade town of the far east
Tinsukia is a bustling commercial and railway town in the far east of Assam, one of the state's most important trading centres and a major junction on the network that links Upper Assam to the rest of India. It sits amid tea gardens and oilfields, close to the point where Assam meets Arunachal Pradesh.
For the visitor it is the base for the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and biosphere reserve, the tranquil Maguri-Motapung wetland (a birdwatcher's paradise), and the historic first oil town of Digboi nearby, where Asia's oldest working refinery and an oil museum tell the story of India's petroleum industry.
