The valley's agrarian heartland
Thoubal is one of the most populous districts of the Manipur valley, a fertile agrarian heartland of rice fields, rivers and lakes east of Imphal, and an important market and education centre for the Meitei countryside. It gives a gentler, rural counterpoint to the capital.
The district holds pleasant waterside spots such as the Thoubal river and Waithou and Ikop lakes, and lies on the road east towards Ukhrul and the hills. Its markets and villages offer an unhurried look at everyday valley life.
