Nagaon
Central Assam's granary town
Nagaon, in central Assam, is one of the state's most populous and agriculturally rich districts — a fertile granary of rice and mustard on the Kolong and Kopili rivers, and the birthplace of the medieval saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, the father of Assam's neo-Vaishnavite culture, at nearby Bordowa.
For travellers, Nagaon is essentially the doorstep of Kaziranga National Park, whose central range at Kohora lies within easy reach, making the town a practical stop on the Guwahati–Upper Assam road. Bordowa Than, the birthplace of Sankardeva, is an important pilgrimage and cultural site.
