Ambubachi Mela

The Ambubachi Mela is among the most important and unusual religious gatherings in India, held each June at the Kamakhya temple on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati. It marks the annual menstruation of the goddess Kamakhya — the earth's fertility — during which the temple closes for three days. When it reopens, hundreds of thousands of devotees, sadhus, tantric practitioners and ascetics gather for darshan and blessings.
For a few days Kamakhya becomes a swirling, intense congregation of red-clad sadhus, naga babas and pilgrims from across the country, making it one of the most extraordinary spiritual spectacles in the region — though not for those who dislike crowds.

Know before you go
- Expect huge crowds and heat in late June; book accommodation in Guwahati well ahead.
- The temple stays closed for the first three days, reopening for the main darshan.
